ant sandwich
it was time to head back to london today, but before i did i was to drop in at my friend's house on the way as he and his girlfriend had a christmas present for me, hooray!
as you can see, the gift is for beastfeaster. i wondered what it could be and delicately unwrapped the small package. to my delight and abhorrence the package turned out to be toasted ants. giant, toasted ants. having a look at them was a big mistake, i should've just closed my eyes and thrown them into my food hole. but i didn't. this is what they looked like:

the packet let me know that these are the world's largest ants (they are massive) and that they are a rare delicacy of amazon indians, with a nutty, bacon-like taste. it also lets me know that these ants make a great substitute for salted peanuts or olives as party snacks! now that's a weird party. after some hesitation i threw one into my mouth and chewed. if these tasted like bacon then i think someone has been eating some seriously wrong bacon. they tasted like earth and, well, ants. imagine how an ant tastes, that is how they really do taste. anty. needless to say, i didn't fancy eating two mouthfuls at that point in time with a long car journey, so i packed them away in their resealable bag and left for london.a couple of hours later and i got home. peckish from the journey i decided to make a sandwich, but not just any sandwich. an ant sandwich. i got some bread and plopped on some lettuce. on another slice i lay on some mayonnaise, pepper and something to ease the taste - plenty of chilli flakes. mmm looking good.

the sandwich was fairly crunchy. i think it was the ants heads, as their abdomens were a little smoother in texture. the mandibles and legs are still being found within my teeth. tasty. in fact, i think they tasted like farts, but that's just my humble opinion. though in a way i am looking forward to eating some more insects soon!thanks to harvey and christine for a great present.

Wow, there were loads of ants in the package! I feared there would only be five or six and it wouldn't count as a hit.
